Olduvai is world famous for the archaeological discoveries made there by Dr. Louis and Mary Leakey. The remains of more than 30 fossils hominoids have been found at various sites and levels in the Gorge, including the skull of Australopithecus-Zinjathropus boisei which is believed to be 1.7 million years old.The name Olduvai Gorge derives its name from Oldupai which is the Maasai word for the type of wild sisal that grows in the gorge.
The fierce sun sucks the moisture from the landscape, baking the earth a dusty red,the withered grass as brittle as straw.The Tarangire River has shriveled to a shadow of its wet season self. But it is choked with wildlife.Thirsty nomads have wandered hundreds of parched kilometers knowing that here,always there is water.
